FAQs about Transformers and Inductors

May. 31, 2022

1. The difference between choke and inductor

① All chokes are inductors, but not all inductors are chokes.

② Inductors could make magnetic field, also could storage energy from magnetic field.

③  The main effect for Choke is removing the AC current, through the DC current.

2. Connections between inductance, air gap, saturation and turns

①  If the inductance is an invariant, the air gap is bigger, the saturation current is bigger. After reach to the saturation current, there is no inductance.

②  In normal situation, the air gap is bigger, the inductance will be smaller. If would like to keep the invariant inductance, it need to be added turns.

3. Links between winding coupling and leakage inductance

The coupling is determined by the way of winding. The coupling is small means the winding is evenly, and the leakage inductance will be less. On the contrary, the coupling is larger means the leakage inductance will be larger, than need to change the way of windings.

4. The element for design a transformer with soft magnetic core

There are some elements for design a high frequency transformer, as below:

①  Turn ratio

②  Inductance

③  Hi-pot(electronic strength)

④  Power

⑤  Current

⑥  RDC: DC Resistance

⑦  Size

⑧  It is the best if you have details for each toroidal winding !

5. The elements for design a toroidal transformer and silicon steel sheet core transformer

It needs power, input/out voltage, current and size.
