Types of Low Frequency Transformers and Use Scenarios

Low frequency transformers are used to propagate signal voltage and signal power, but also to achieve impedance matching between circuits, and have an isolating effect on direct current. There is no difference in principle between high-frequency transformers and low-frequency transformers. Let's see some basic types of low ferquency transformers.

Classification

It is divided into coupling transformer, input transformer and output transformer, the shape are similar to the power transformer.

Types of Low Frequency Transformers and Use Scenarios

Coupling transformer

inter-stage coupling transformer is used between two levels of audio amplification circuit, as a coupling element, the output signal of the former amplification circuit to the latter level, and make the appropriate impedance transformation.

Input transformer

In early semiconductor radios, the transformer used between the audio propulsion stage and the power amplifier stage is the input transformer, which plays the role of signal coupling and transmission, also known as the propulsion transformer. Input transformers have single-ended input type and push-pull input type. If the push circuit is a single-ended circuit, the input transformer is also a single-ended input transformer; if the push circuit is a push-pull circuit, the input transformer is also a push-pull input transformer.

Output transformer

output transformer connected between the output circuit of the power amplifier and the speaker, mainly for signal transmission and impedance matching. Output transformer is also divided into single-ended output transformer and push-pull output transformer two.

Types of Low Frequency Transformers and Use Scenarios

Use scenario

Where there is a requirement to "change the voltage", can be used.

Although some appliances used switching power supplies very early, but, including personal computers, the earliest is also the use of low-frequency transformers of linear power supply.

Generally speaking, switching transformers are light weight, small size, high efficiency, easy to manufacture and adjust, easy maintenance, low internal resistance, relatively high voltage regulation characteristics and power factor, in many specific occasions have great advantages.

Linear power supply internal resistance is slightly higher, but its overload capacity is outstanding, the use of very flexible and convenient, change the wiring can change many characteristics, manufacturing is simple, the process requirements are low, high-power cost is not high, but also irreplaceable advantages.

There is also: the traditional amplifier, interstage coupling using audio transformers, in addition to voltage conversion, there is an impedance conversion function, which is a major defect of switching power supplies and high-frequency transformers are not able to as. Audio also belongs to the low frequency.

Almost all of the current power supply transformers, regardless of the model, belong to the low-frequency variable.

If a high-frequency transformer is placed in a low-frequency circuit, it will lead to an increase in current and may burn out the transformer. High-frequency circuits do not work properly. High-frequency transformers refer specifically to switching power transformers, rather than industrial frequency transformers (50 ~ 60 Hz operating frequency). Switching power transformers usually work at 20K ~ 200K HZ range, its inductance is also extremely small, between 100 microhen to 1 millihen. Second, the core of the low frequency transformer is ferrite; while the high frequency transformer is many sheets of iron-silicon. Care needs to be taken not to confuse the two types of transformers when using them.
